Quantity vs. Quality. Bacteria have numbers and simplicity on their side - as we treat them with drugs, the ones that are resistant to the drugs are the ones that survive and reproduce. Since their lifecycles are far faster than ours and they propagate faster, they can become resistant distressingly quickly; prime example of Darwin in action.
