RIP: Jef Raskin 1943-2005 [by Schol-R-LEA;2]
User interface pioneer Jef Raskin died of cancer on Saturday, Feb 26th. He was the original designer of the Apple Macintosh, the Canon Cat, and the Swyftware user suite, and had been the principal developer of the Zoomable interface concept. He recently began the Humane Interface Project, which was an attempt to develop a next-generation GUI.
Raskin was also a noted amateur musician and model airplane enthusiast, whose 'Piper Cub offense' argument against SDI (that a missile defense is irrelevant in a geopolitical atmosphere where the most likely threats come not from other superpowers but from terrorists using low-tech approaches which he missile defense cannot affect) had been the subject of some controversy.
