My psych book says somewhere that from birth up to 3 years old children are sexual, then sexuality kinda goes away or stays dormant, and appears back at about 12 years old.
That's when hormones kick in full force and pubic/underarm/facial hair grow.
Thus, they are sexual. Maybe not completely as an adult, as their sexual organs are smaller and mentally they may not be fully ready, but they are still sexual. That's why many teens experiment with each other, or play doctor. They develop interest in each other's bodies.
As for taboos, some taboos are silly, and some are not. Before masturbation was a taboo, and the taboo itself was harmful. If you masturbated, it was believed that many great ailments will came upon thee. I bet it created many problems for kids, and I know some people for whom it caused noteable trouble and caused them to hate that part of the body, while their body was just acting naturally. And look where this taboo is now .. it is laughed at and is practically nonexistant anymore in majority of society. I agree that there are harmful cases of child abuse, but I also think that there are cases where there is no or little harm done, and that society sometimes creates situations of much ado about nothing.
Divorce was another taboo, and it's not anymore. But divorce causes harm. Why isn't it a taboo anymore ? I guess because people realized that living in a bad marriage is worse than divorce itself. Pedophilia perhaps is a different thing, but it may have it's good and bad sides if you look into it. i.e. in some cases it may be a mentor/student relationship, where the older person teaches the younger about sex, with mutual consent and without abuse going on. Perhaps individual cases need to be looked into to see if abuse was indeed going on or not. Whatever it is, I don't see it as black and white. |
