If someone (example, engineer) is a couple points away from a new level, and can afford (in their opinion) to repair or buld something in a safe or uncontested zone (in order to get the point or two needed for their next level) I can see that being something I'd do. Mind, that would depend on how much time was left in the map, how my team was doing, etc... we'd have to be doing fairly well or holding our own for me to do this.
I did this once recently in order to get the flak jacket for eng... was worth it when I hit some landmines on the way into the fueldump to plant :)
