pedophilia by dennismv2005-02-27 01:33:21
I have always maintained that... by moongoddess 2005-02-27 09:11:07
the fact that it is an issue of trust makes it a problem. There is an age of consent for a reason. Children are learning what is right and what is wrong (societally and personally) during the years between their birth and their late teen years. And although we continue learning beyond that, children depend upon adults to make, at first, and then aid them in the decision processes.

Personally, I've met 16 year olds that shouldn't be allowed to choose between brands of gum and others that could be running major corporations. But the age of consent is not just arbitrary, it is there to protect and nurture children.

Consider the Mary Kay Loterno case. The child in question maintained his devotion to his 'abuser' (quotes mine) and upon reaching the legal age of 21, Married her. He also had two children with the woman. But he made his decisions on his own. I'm not saying that this should be the case for everyone. But the child has to grow up to a point where they can make an informed choice. Not one that they have been led by an authority figure (read adult) to believe is right.

The pedophile must respect this innocence and allow the child to grow to make their own choices. If this impulse cannot be controled, then we, as a society must make sure that the children are protected.

I wouldn't want to be forced into a situation unwillingly, and I'm 40.
