pure.
Over the summer I worked at a camp in maine, the campers were aged 7 to 16 and the staff were aged 20+ with one exception. He was 18 now, the difference in age between an 18 and a 16 year old is nothing and is perfectly acceptable in a social situation. He held a position of power. Now before I continue nothing actually happened. No laws were broken and no damage done.
It was the oppinion of most of the staff that this 18 year old was getting too friendly with some of the girls. I wont deny they were attractive but thats the line isn't it. over those three months I formed an oppinion that anyone aged between 15 and 19 is very much exploring their sexuality especially in a co-ed camp situation. A young girl of 15 could easily get herself into a relationship with an older man and truely believe that she loved him. We have all been there, our hormones make us think we love anyone who shows us the slightest of affection.
To sleep with someone on such terms, taking advantage of a difficult stage in their life is wrong. Punishment depends on the situation, if the older man is preying on younger girls then it should be more severe than if he really cares for the person he is with.
A line has to be drawn somewhere, its not the same line for everyone but at the end of the day a court has to decide how much in the wrong someone was and we have to trust our legal system to do this.
*Disclaimer: I used the young girl/older male thing because it was the easiest to convey and is the most common but it does happen the other way round. |
