Why do you say that "nothing in my mind [] can justify anyone over the age of 20 sleeping with anyone under the age of 16"? Why would such an act prevent a child from "having a enjoyable childhood and a productive and fullfilling life"? Really, I'm curious. There's certainly nothing biologically wrong with such an act, and I don't see why children of any particular age should be arbitrarily considered unable to give consent. Is consensual sex between a 22yo and a 16yo fundamentally any different from that between a 21yo and a 15yo?
On second thought, I guess the question could be transmuted into: Why does society insist on keeping children "pure", and mostly ignorant, for so long? What's the gain? If population growth is a concern (which it certainly is), then surely a more permissive view on contraceptives and abortion will do more than trying to suppress people's most basic instincts.
I suppose it comes down to society perpetuating its current ways, but I'd be interested to hear any other opinions . . .
[Interesting note: my only sex ed class in the US was in 8th grade, but here in Japan I've seen schools that have manga books for early elementary kids with rather graphic descriptions of the process. It's also my impression that Japan hasn't had nearly as much problem with "improper" sexual activity as the US.] |
