Ok, Opera 8 Beta 2 is the spiffy. | by LionsPhil | 2005-02-27 07:13:29 |
| I liked it, though I didn't switch. |

The default layout is finally sane. The panel is now hidden at the start. It's a layout similar to mine, in fact.
Bravo to them for finally figuring out that the panel is a horrible eyesore. ;)
The tab-bar has grown a 'bin' icon, for closed tabs, which saves having to go via Window > Closed.
Another good idea. This one, however, a FF extension (Session Saver) had first. :-p
MDI-haters will be pleased to know that Opera now has a 'plain tabs' mode, which is the default. MDI is still there for those who want it.
I've never understood why anyone would "hate" MDI. It functions just like tabs if you want it to, but has more features if you want them. *Boggle*
Automatic "Top Ten" bookmarks in the address bar dropdown. You can stick extra searches in there too (I replaced the default Amazon with dictionary and encyclopedia searches).
This I really, really liked. The only reason I still like FF's search better is that you can put ANY search engine you like in there, and build your own if you feel like it. Still, having it in the address bar, only appearing when you need it, is a great idea.
A whole bunch of nifty security stuff, like showing the certificate organization in the address bar when at a secure site. The changelog covers those pretty well, and includes a better solution to the IDN issue that El Reg flamed Mozilla over (to be fair, it seems that FF 1.0.1 now takes a similar approach).
I agree, I'm not a huge fan of what Mozilla and FF have done about this. I didn't read the Opera changelog, so I didn't know about this, but it's cool to hear about, though it does contain a little more "buyer beware" philosophy than many may be comfortable with.
Telling your browser to "Opera Speak" and having it read out the page rocks. Have this feature left uninstalled until needed rocks more (it is, in fact, described as an 'extension'). Having this all support aural CSS is just teh win. In terms of practicality, though, selecting stuff and hitting 'V' is about a hundred times easier. ("Sorry, I did not understand.")
Opera has always kicked everything to the curb in terms of accessibility, so this one is no surprise. I would never use such a feature, but it's awesome that it's available. I would also love to see more browsers adopt the "extension" philosophy, especially if they're the ones making some of the extensions.
Annoyingly, M2 is *not* installed-when-needed, like voice. However, it doesn't seem to load unless you have at least one account, which is an improvement over the manual enabling/disabling in 7.54.
I loved the idea of M2, but found its implementation to be awful. I tried importing my email in at least 3 different versions, and it didn't handle any of them correctly. It was pitched like a localized version of GMail - labels, filters, conversations - but didn't end up like that at all from what I ever saw. Ah well.
The main reason I'm back to FF is the search bar and compatability. Opera still doesn't work right with GMail or Hotmail, and while arguably not Opera's fault (they're well within rights to say those websites are doing things that aren't "standard" enough to be supported, so nyeah), those are sites I use. If a browser can't work with them, I'm not going to use it and certainly not going to look at ads or pay for the privilege.
Still, I agree with you it's a step up from v7. At the same time, FF's extensions are getting sophisticated and bug-free enough that (minus the accessibility) almost everything good about Opera can now be had gratis. |
