Ok, Opera 8 Beta 2 is the spiffy. by LionsPhil 2005-02-27 07:13:29
* The default layout is finally sane. The panel is now hidden at the start. It's a layout similar to mine, in fact.
* The tab-bar has grown a 'bin' icon, for closed tabs, which saves having to go via Window > Closed.
* MDI-haters will be pleased to know that Opera now has a 'plain tabs' mode, which is the default. MDI is still there for those who want it.
* Automatic "Top Ten" bookmarks in the address bar dropdown. You can stick extra searches in there too (I replaced the default Amazon with dictionary and encyclopedia searches).
* A whole bunch of nifty security stuff, like showing the certificate organization in the address bar when at a secure site. The changelog covers those pretty well, and includes a better solution to the IDN issue that El Reg flamed Mozilla over (to be fair, it seems that FF 1.0.1 now takes a similar approach).
* Telling your browser to "Opera Speak" and having it read out the page rocks. Have this feature left uninstalled until needed rocks more (it is, in fact, described as an 'extension'). Having this all support aural CSS is just teh win. In terms of practicality, though, selecting stuff and hitting 'V' is about a hundred times easier. ("Sorry, I did not understand.")
* Annoyingly, M2 is *not* installed-when-needed, like voice. However, it doesn't seem to load unless you have at least one account, which is an improvement over the manual enabling/disabling in 7.54.
* It's quite a lot like 7.x. Mind you, 7.0 was a lot like 6.x. Opera seem to incrememnt the major number at strange times.
