how much ram does xp support? by richardv 2005-02-21 10:32:01
This is a simple question with a complex answer. The 32-bit version of XP has a total memory map of 4 GB per application. In XP 2 GB of this space are shared for the kernel, which leaves 2 GB of meory space per application. Windows XP can directly access a maximum of 4 GB of physical RAM, but this is dependent on the manufacturer's chipset--some only support 2 or 3 GB of physical RAM. The 64-bit version can support more; the actual amount varies based on the hardware, but I personally know of one system on Win64 which has a full TB (1,024 GB) of physical RAM.
