Regarding my (and other's) complaining about users by rogue19712005-02-14 18:28:42
Did it for years. by nin_man 2005-02-14 19:03:36
And I understand that, while people own computers because they need them, most don't understand the inner workings of them.

You own a car, but I doubt you could tell me its compression ratio, or even what kind of oil it uses. I'd be surprised if you could point out the starter, because most people can't. This doesn't mean you're not able to drive it, or maybe even change the tire.

If you went to a mechanic and were berated for not tightening your engine head bolts to 73 ft-lbs instead of 65, would you think your mechanic was a jackass for his elitist attitude? Just because you had an innate ability to use a computer doesn't mean that everyone does, or that everyone should have to. Nor does it make you better than them. They're calling you for help - and you're paid to give it to them. Remember that.

Instructing customers on basic tasks is a part of your job. If you don't like that, perhaps you should seek other employment. I can promise you that's a part of your job that's going to stick with you at all levels of IT.
