Now that he's an adult, he should be making his own decisions, sure. But ten years ago, whether they were "in love" or not, it was not appropriate for them to have that sort of relationship - a teacher-student relationship involves an asymmetry of power, and that's never an appropriate basis for a relationship.

It's certainly possible that they have matured since then, but one wonders (I wonder) how much their current relationship is founded on a relationship that was improper to start out with.
