and it's better practice. As I said, it's a quick&dirty script, just written for an answer to the question. I almost never use clear variables in frontend scripts (it's always uri parsing) so I don't encounter those problems. But anyway, no excuses. I forgot about $_SERVER. Doh! I always use $_POST and $_GET but somehow $_SERVER escaped my attention. Thanks for the reminder.
