A fair whack of autoconf-y stuff out there is buggier than the 0.1 release of the software it `helps' you build. So much so that I gave it an entry in a `special' script that some of us maintain on the University machines: 
prb102@servalan prb102 $ Non-FYOSS autoconf
./configure --disable-bugs --without-excessive-verbosity --with-
completion-date=/today/would/be/nice/ --prefix=/who/cares/when/
you/just/ignore/it/anyway/
The results of too many headaches trying to get autoconf'd software to deal with the fact that I'm not root and would actually like to use a prefix for ALL files. And each attempt is another minute of slow checks, and the construction of even slower recursive makefiles...
