I remember that AppleTalk was tempermental. I think I remember that the protocol would not traverse segments or switched networks. I remember that the network we had set up when I worked at a school system was a hodgepodge of different devices to get it all to work.

The printers were connected to RJ11 adapters. Then we used phone cords to connect the printers to patch panels, and as it had to be a daisy-chained, each printer had two connections to the patch panels. The last printer on each chain would be plugged into this RJ11 block which had a connection to a doo-hickey called a StarRouter that would route the AppleTalk traffic across the different segments.

Mmmmmmmm, them was the days. :-D
