but civil court doesn't require the same standards as criminal court. They needn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt, only that their statement is more likely true than not.

Not being familiar with the _entire_ mess, I'm not going to comment further. There's a need to recognize that there are two sides to this story, and just because we know and like you doesn't mean we can ignore the other side.

I would venture that the advice given by others is valid enough. Your best bet is a lawyer. If you don't have one, you have no one to blame for the outcome but yourself. If you have one and you don't think he's doing his job right, you can file a complaint with the local Bar Association.
