They may have won in small claims court (and that's probably because the girls' families admitted to offering to pay medical expenses), but they have lost bigtime in the "court of public opinion".
Personally, I think the girls did err in not identifying themselves when asked (but then, I grew up in Virginia, where it's legal to shoot the paperboy, AFAIK. But the story I remember from my youth, in retrospect, reeks of Urban Legend). But the couple totally overreacted.
