THE FRS and GMRS bands:
FRS is limited to about 2-miles, while the GMRS can get up to 5. I think that band-range association, however, is highly dependent on the power of the radio. The U.S. FCC requires a license for GMRS (at least last I checked) but the radio companies aren't really alerting people too well to that fact. They're kind of taking a "it's your responsibility to know that" stance on the issue I think. I don't know what the Canadian Guidlines are, of course. Sorry, I know others on this board probably know alot more about this than I do, so maybe I'll move on.
I do know that the 2 and 5 mile numbers are on a low-interference day, with no obsticles in the way, line-of-sight, etc. They're pretty much unattainable in all of my situations. The numbers might have well been attained only in a vacuum.
Anyway, I have two motorolas with rechargeable batteries: they have rubber, water resistant cases. I highly recommend if you get the rechargeable type, they should be interchangeable with regular batteries for obvious reasons. You may in fact want a few extra channels, because with the popularity of these things, I get regular interference with other people in any kind of populated situation. My set also has weather radios, compass, altimeter, thermometer, and a clock. All those bells and whistles cost me about $120USD a piece 3 years ago. Sorry I don't remember the model number at this point, but I'm sure they're discontinued for some new types out there.
They work great though, for most situations I've found and I usually don't max out the range unless I'm in a driving situation. If motorola hasn't decrease their quality standards, I would recommend that brand.
Hope I was of some help,
