though, I don't know if it would be practical for your situation, is if you both use cell phones, to use a company like Nextel. I think in Canada, an equivalent provider would be Telus. I know it's not quite what you were asking, but I thought I'd mention it as a possibility on the off-chance that it might fit your needs. And your range would be quite a bit greater than 5 km. :-)
