| Years ago when I had the first ADSL offering from Telus (named MMG or Multi-Media Gateway) I had a max up and down of 1.5 and 4.0 megabits modified by my distance from the switch. After 2-3 years they introduced a "new service" which cost more and offered less. After another 6 months my connection at home behaved largely in the manner you describe above; the connection was less than reliable and kept failing throughout the day.
Calls to their helpdesk fixed nothing, until I asked Edward at Parasun/Cablerocket to call his upper-tier buddy at Telus. He was told, and I quote, "We don't support that product anymore, so we're just going to let it degrade in favour of the new product."
