Sounds like, at least, it's still lodged in the kidney, and has
not tried to pass--that's when the real "fun" begins! (*OUCH!*)
If they can do ESWL before it gets "loose", you might be spared
all but relatively-"minor" (meaning, still hurts like crazy, just
not so excruciating that you'll wonder if dying would be better)
pain.
More important than cutting back the coffee, IME, is increasing
water intake, so you are never even slightly dehydrated. A bonus
is that this tends also to have good effects on excess weight and
a host of other health problems.
I know that whenever I do anything "bad" (e.g. consume oxalate-
rich foods, like certain berries and leafy vegetables), I drink
*extra* water, to keep the concentrations down. Apparently, it
is virtually impossible to control the calcium side, as it will
be pulled from the bones, if necessary, to bind with whatever
anions (or anionic radicals) are present.
Of course, IANAMD; just a guy who has "labored under the stone".
