...disassemble someone's cubicle, but never could work up quite enough nerve.
The relocation bit is a good one. Only thing I can think of that might be better would be to relocate him to the bathroom.
I used to work with a guy who ran a month-long practical joke, centered around the mistaken idea that he was preparing to quit the company. Every day, he'd remove something else from his cube and put it into hiding, making it look like he was slowly taking stuff home.
He was targetting one nosy guy in the group, but inadvertantly caught another guy who, upon learning that the prankster was "leaving", started making noise to our manager about getting his window cube. Our manager, not being wise to the scheme, absolutely freaked until he was let in on it all.
In the end, it was almost painfully ugly. The prankster left on a Friday as if it was his "last day", having gone a month without actually saying he was leaving, but also leaving his entire cube almost barren. He came back on Monday as if nothing happened, and when the targets asked him what was going on, he gave them gag gifts selected to highlight their gullibility. The two targets were humiliated to the point that one of them (the cube-claiming guy) left the group a few months later, simply out of embarrassment over his petty greed. Not pretty, but still, it was probably the best long-term practical joke I'd ever seen pulled off. |
