You said:
"I think the comparison between the re-election of Bush and Berlusconi is rather poor ..."
I think Berlusconi IS well comparable because here (Italy) like there (USA) we have a neo-con president that tried to cheat in his 1st term, tried to get rid of achievements concerning democracy, transparency (of governmental work), and trade unions. Additionally both behaved "strange" and offended MANY people abroad. Berlusconi is additionally lacking any economical success in his own country.
Yet both were re-elected...
You say: "I don't think that we still take every fashion from there [USA]... a lot of people here [...] started to rethink their attitude toward the US."
that was not what I intended to say: I totally agree many people rethink their attitude but STILL copy FASHIONS (that's the latest craze in sports, music, movies etc. NOT invading other countries, or forcing other nations to their (democratic) luck!) largely unreflected. I don't see much genuine coming form here these days (that's for Germany only!). :-(
Last but not least you say: "...created a stronger feeling about a common, European community. We [i.e. the Europeans] rediscovered our own culture."
Also here I'm more pessimistic (as usual) and would say we're one step before: we think that finally there should be s.th. like "Europe" and start(!) thinking about what this "European Culture" could be...
but hey 'merkins (if you still are reading; our stereotype tells us your average attention span isn't long enough :-))
Don't get me wrong: we sure conceive the actions of the US Government significantly different than the US people (Illiad, note that I'm able to differntiate between USA & the rest of America :-)) and get aware that most of your foreign policy are mainly targeted to your national interest: no more hero status as it surely used to be (helping a wretched Germany after WW2 and stuff).
