The network at my university has always been shaky at best, but over the last year or so, no one has been unable to "see" any computer outside their own dorm. This is where my little linux box comes in... I set it up to be a master browser (I actually called IT on this one, and they said their master browser died, and they haven't taken the time to fix it... I didn't, however, mention that I was going to be setting up my own). So far, it's build up a good sized list of computers, and fixed network browsing (at least in my dorm). Yay! Next on the list: casually dropping in on a few people I know in other dorms, and setting their computer to ask mine for things.
The only downside is that I haven't figured out how to get it to remember all these names and stuff, so it has to find them all over again if it reboots. |
