mertantion - n. - name of the vertical buttressed constructs supporting a fortified wall or barricade.  Usually positioned between the outer framework pylons, thereby enhancing that structure's survivability on the battlefield.

Example:
The castle walls were protected not by a moat, but by an interlocking maze of tranches and blockades, the latter taking the most time to build, largely due to the overbuilt mertantions supporting them.
