If the choice is clearly between one killer losing his life and my loved ones losing theirs, then I would choose the killer losing his life. I don't know that I could kill, though.

You made it easy. If the choice is between one life and another then the choice is equal as far as human life is concerned. If the choice was between me or my loved ones being maimed, and me killing someone - that would be a true test of my principles.

Then again, what makes you think that I would define someone intent on killing or maiming me as human? In a human body, maybe, but does the term 'inhuman monster' mean anything to you?
