not just to buttress private agendas
There's a ton of pseudo-science -- and worse, bogus science -- out there, done to justify positions such as,
(off the top of my head):
Condoms don't prevent HIV/AIDS
Marijuanna is a "gateway" drug, that usually leads to hard-drug addiction
Acid rain is caused by trees
Global warming is not only not a problem, it's an illusion
Pornography causes rape &/or pedophilia
Shark-skin/cartilage prevents/cures cancer
I'm sure you can come up with several more examples yourself.
The really troubling thing is that of late, (especially in the US) is that government and other publically-funded research, education and public-info provision/outreach has been blatently rigged, censored, and outright fabricateded to support such agendas.
