That was until I picked up the book in an airport bookshop and actually gave it a go. The collected articles, notes and what have you give you a real insight into the man himself, something I'd probably never have had without the book. The unfinished Dirk Gently can kindly be described as "promising". It shows a lot of his imaginative flair but unsurprisingly lacks the polish of his completed works. It does give the impression though that it was a lot more effort to write than the previous novels. All in all though, it was a fitting tribute to a great writer. I've not felt that sad about finishing a book in a long time, knowing that there won't be any more.
