Make sure your hidden files are unhidden/viewable when you burnt the cd's? Also, what speeds did you burn them at? Sounds stupid I know but we had similar issues with MSDN disks here at the college when we tried to burn copies of them for use. Seems the disks did not like the SCSI cd burner as insisted on wanting to be burned at 4X to be readable. (yuck!)

Same thing you are experiencing...no errors on the burn, Windows started the install with no problems, but once the actual installation began, random errors and system locks/crashes/etc.

Try burning them at a lower speed and make sure you can see all hidden files (as there are a couple if memory serves). This *should* fix you up.
