True Tales Of The FFL: The Abomination... by DesertRat66 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Just got this:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OK, so one of my regular gun colectors calls me up to advise me that a H&R Garand is inbound that he purchased off a gunbroker auction and to call him when it arrives.

This will be his first Garand and according to the ad it was an all original H&R in EXCELLENT condition and he paid $900 for it. Sounds like a good deal.

And today it arrived.

(image)

I have never seen a Garand so f4ed up in an attempt to clean it up and / or sporterize it. First off can anyone tell me what the f4 this thing is suppossed to be? I've never seen one. (It's an Anschutz/AJ Parker style globe. Meant to have inserts in it. The inserts are circular discs with either an aperture or post.)

(image)

And apparantly the rifle was dipped in a drum of lacquer and stirred. Everything got varnished, even most of the metal.

So I pull the trigger group just to make sure it doesn't have airsoft parts and I see this...(image) Yes that is cut sheet metal that some a**clown has used to shim things up a bit.

There should be a law that if you d*** up a rifle bad enough (especially a classic collectible) that we should be allowed to smack you with it one time. At this point it couldn't hurt the value of the rifle.

The followup:

The guy just inspected his rifle. He called the seller and asked him about the obvious discrepancies and was told the following.

It IS an original Garand, in other words not a reproduction. And he felt is IS in really excellent condition. Meaning the guy isn't gonna budge one bit. But he did offer to make it right by discounting any accessories the buyer may wish to purchase for 'his' rifle.

I've seen rifles in better condition that were captured on the battlefield and stored stacked loose on pallets for 40 years!
