Can someone explain this to me in english? by voxwoman2006-11-19 12:55:59
quick overview of what is happening by stacato 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Since IDN (International Domain Names) is now supported new charachters besides what was currently specified as valid are possible. Germany and a few other European countries are first on the line working for the UMLAUTE to be put in. well, it is now possible. Now i could get the domain www.bärbel.de which was previously not possible. Sure, it all sounds happy dandy but this brings a problem. Some Characters such as the Western "a" and the russian "a" are displayed the same way in browsers. DISPLAY wise they look the same, CODE wise they are different.
http://www.paypal.com/
vs.
http://www.pаypal.com/

DNS lookupwise the browser notices the difference and leads you to the correct IP for the webserver. This is no problem realy. Specially not for Paypal and ONlinebanking since all is done over https. Security. right ?! THINK AGAIN. Here the browser has the problem. (anybody correct me if i am wrong) The browser interprets it as actually PayPal.com and grabs the cert from it even though you are not on the right site.YOu think you are on the right spot, but you aren't.

So what i suggest. If you feel uncertain. Type in the url by hand. the FULL URL. do not use clickies nor Browser History of visited links. do that, and you are pretty much safe from this little 'bug'.
