A need or a want. by dennismv2005-01-27 18:17:21
Needs are contextual by leistico 2005-01-27 22:33:33
A need is some action or condition or material required to sustain or achieve a desired state. Need implies contextual necessity while want implies volitional desire.

If a person *wants* to keep on being alive (context), said person needs food, water, oxygen, sleep, etc. If a person *wants* social intercourse, said person needs other individuals around, or else his desire will go unfulfilled. In most people the desire, the *want* to keep living is so great it's considered a survival "instinct"

There's your demarkation. Sounds like your friend is trying to remove context from the discussion, invalidating his thinking in the face of reality.
