I think I have to agree with everything you say here.

Without awareness, I think there can be a need for something. A need, in that case, would be whatever is required to fulfill the function of the device or object. In the case of the lightbulb, the need would be for electricity. In the case of a body, it would be for food, water, etc.
But, as you say, that is only appropriate as far as the object is intended to fulfill a purpose. If we don't care that the lightbulb is unlit, then there is no need for electricity.
