The Twixters: Refusing to Grow Up by Illiad2006-11-19 12:55:59
Woo-hoo, I'll never be an adult by Dazed 2005-01-27 21:19:36
and neither will NOLAwitch for that matter. Having finally found a way to access and read the full article (yay university electronic subscription!), I hope I never qualify for their definition of adulthood (married, with children, a house all your own, a permanant full-time job (you presumably hate, since that seems to go with the territory)).

I have three overriding goals in my life: I want to learn stuff about things (how broad is that!), to travel, and to help people. I find jobs, education, and situations to accomplish these goals. That said, I'm not completely ignorant of the future, nor do I live anywhere near my parents' home. I am developing superior money management skills to my parents (particularly my consumer mother). I have few plans for a career - I want jobs so I can try some different ways to accomplish my ultimate goals. I enjoy my friends. I also have a generally healthy relationship with my boyfriend and like both our families - why bother getting married (the only good reasons I've come up with are legal)?

I firmly believe I am responsible. In fact, I occassionally (and arrogantly) think I am more responsible than those friends of mine who got married straight out of high school, had kids and settled down. I am not following the path I am supposed to - I am trying to be better for the world (socially, politically, physically) instead.

So, if I have to be married and have kids of my own to grow up, then I'll take this silly "twixter" label anyday!

By the way, "adolescence" is also a very recent construction. It came in to use around the first World War, but I can't quite remember if it was right before or right after. Of course, it didn't really develop into the way we think of adolescence until the 1950s. If society made room for that new definition 50 to 100 years ago, why not this one?
