| ...ah, but do psychological needs count? |

Would you say that periods of safety are also needs? Soldiers that are denied any "safe" resting time do go nuts. Being constantly under stress (especially for children) actually changes the way that synapse connections in the brain are made.
Safety isn't needed for survival (we assume that our theoretical character won't die from his lack of safety, only get the psychological ill-effects) - he'll be alive, just changed. Probably quite crazy (by our non-stressed definition). Considering that humans will often place themselves in potential starvation situations to avoid dangerous places, I'd say there is a strong case. It becomes two needs competing.
As you say, humans don't need sex to survive, but what are the psychological effects of being denied? You qualify it by allowing masturbation, I'd actually consider masturbation to fall under "sex" for this discussion. More to the point, will a human put the "need" for sex above another "need"?
As irambi points out, humans need love, rather than sex. I'm not entirely convinced. I suspect that if you put two people in a closed environment together, and one has a deadly std that the other knows about, sooner or later (most likely later) they will engage in sexual acts. At least enough to satisfy the sexual "need", although perhaps that need can be satisfied with minimal human contact.
I'm not speaking from any sort of authority, with any sort of statistics or case studies. So take everything I say with a grain of salt :) |
