...the difference between 'natural' and 'artificial.' For instance, we technically can say EVERYTHING is natural because it *originally* came from nature, right? Humans came from the earth and return to the earth (unless one is jettisoned into space), as well as all materials so there isn't anything we can create that isn't natural, right?
Well that's just dumb. We use 'natural' and 'man-made' (or 'artificial') as a convenience to differentiate between things that humans assist nature with, and things that occur without human help. It's just over-thinking and annoying to bother with being incredibly technically accurate with the term.
Yours is the same thing. Yes, if we really dig deep, all needs could be defined as wants, but who the heck cares how technical you get? We use the terms for convenience in differentiating between something that is vital to survival (even that is relative) and something that is superfluous.
I think your psychologist friend is trying to sound smarter than he is by labelling a typical argument-digression centerpiece with "a new way of thinking."
