One of my friends who's a Ph.D. in Psychology said that there are no needs, there are only wants. I'm not sure if he was absolutely serious (looked like he was) or perhaps he was trying out a new way of thinking.
So for example a basic human need for food can be considered a want. Afterall, people don't need food, they just want it. And sometimes they want it really really really bad when they are hungry or starving. Well, eventually they may die without food, which may point to the fact that people do need food (if we want them to survive).
The one question I had, which may be more open to debate is the question of sex: is sex is a need or want ? Theoretically, people can survive without it. Does this make it a want ? |
