We had an overlay area code slapped on us (248) about 4 or 5 years back. Ever since we have to dial the full ten digits even though very few numbers have been issued in the new area code that I have seen It actually is somewhat simpler in that you never have to go "do I dial 7 or 10 this time".

Oh, and the first 3 digits of the 7 are in theory a city code. In reality they are more of a "this randomly bounded section of the area" code.
