Do you know the person whose computer is compromised? If you know them, they probably won't press charges.
You also have to carefully phrase your warning.
Consider it from the other side: if you came into work and a popup showed up that said "your computer is open to the rest of the network," would you think you just had a virus infection, or would you take it seriously? What if the person leaving the note signed their name? Riskier for the person leaving the note, as they can then be caught, but also more verifiable for the person with the unsecured computer.
If I could physically find the machine, I would probably leave a sticky note on the monitor that says "your computer is insecure-- call IT for help, please." If I couldn't, I'd probably leave well enough alone.
Of course, I generally leave unsecured machines alone anyway. They'll figure it out sooner or later. |
