people in a ten-mile radius? Were there lots of different religions (not just different flavors of Christianity)? How about lots of different races? How represented was the gay population? No, rural life is good if you're one of the sheep willing to go along with a similar lifestyle as those around you.

My experience is that rural environments breed suspicious, gossipy, insular people with little empathy for others outside their own group. YMMV.
