I worked in the financial aid office at my university. And while I don't know your background that well, I saw a LOT of parents who could help their kids (lived in exclusive neighborhoods, drove expensive cars), but didn't help their kids at all after high school.

The parents rationalized it by saying "I worked my way up from nothing; if my kids do it all themselves it'll make them more motivated." Never mind that the job prospects now for someone with high school education are pitiful. How many union jobs/line jobs can a kid work now and do night school? A retail job at six bucks an hour doesn't pay the rent. Part of this is the fault of our high schools too, though.

Not being ABLE to help your child further I can understand somewhat- buying a Mercedes and not even helping out with community college I find selfish and shorsighted.
