The analogy i used (a child) becuase it would be the kid inviting them in, whether a sales person, or a robber, since the child is about as intelligent as a WAP, it only knows what the owners / parents have told it. A wap is probally about as easy to ower power as a child is if teh guy wants to break in too.
Do you find it immoral for a child to say "come in" after someone for charity comes to the door?
The child shouldn't invite them in, but its still an invitation.
I don't agree with the handle analogy becuase I don't see it like that. To me, its like telling someone that your going a way for a week, pointing out that the place is unlocked, and then having them go to your place, watch TV for an hour and leave.
Maybe they shouldn't have been there, but you gave them the knowledge they needed, and they didn't harm anything.
A WAP gives a person the knowledge they need to enter your network, SSID, channel, DHCP, all that, your computer asks them for permission to enter, and there WAP either accepts and gives them information or refuses it.
The instructions with the few WAPS i've bought have given basic instructions on how to secure the WAP, its pretty simple, and has given warnings about not securing it. The persion makes a concious choice on if they want to secure it or not.
Oh and BTW I have two WAPs on my network... I have a hub going right off the modem... one wire goes to a private network, with a WAP which is secured. Another goes to another WAP which is insecure.
Keeps my computers fairly safe, but gives back to those who need a quick net connection. |
