Not everyone pays for unlimited service. The bandwidth to connect to them wireless is effectively unlimited, but as soon as you use their network to connect outside itself, you are costing the owners bandwidth that they could well be paying for. That isn't "waste light". That is going into their house to turn on the lights that You want lit.
