his statement in the conversation was more meant to convey God's infinite capacity for forgiveness, as long as one has a truly repentant heart.

So if you take religion out of it, it would be more akin to saying, "I can kill a thousand people, but as long as I am truly sorry, my parents will forgive me and will still love me."

"But if you were the type of person who would be sorry for doing such a thing, you would not be the type of person to do it in the first place."

This isn't to say that people who are later sorry for doing things aren't truly so. Taking religion out of it makes it difficult to get the context of the conversation just right.
