I think I see a bit more of your point.
You view Christianity as a whole to be good. Perhaps this is the point of Christianity. However, not all people follow it, even though they say they do. Perhaps they take things from the whole and misconstrue them for their purposes. Is your question then "who do we blame ? " Well, no, your question is why do we blame religion ?
I think that blaming religion is misguided. Religion can be viewed as a "helping hand" to give people wrong ideas. i.e. the certain guy in the white turban whose name I won't utter, can justify his murders by saying that Americans killed Muslims, and he must fight back, as the Bible says Do onto others as you'd have them do unto you or something. Some people blame the religion for this reason -- for providing wrong ideas to people. Perhaps that's an answer to your question. Like I said, this is misguided, as people find their own reasons, and then look wherever to justify them.
Also you can be non religious and not kill people.
Here's a different spin on the above conversation between you and the person. If we take religion out of this, there may be several intepretations of what's going on. One of them is as such: he's saying:
"I can kill a thousand people and still be a good person"
You are saying:
"If you are a good person, why do you need to kill people?".
I feel that in this case killing a thousand people and being a good person is somewhat conflicting, depending on what exactly a "good person" means. |
