build a house or bash someone's head in. One is it's intended purpose, one is not. If someone killed with a hammer, would you blame the person or the hammer?
Would the people committing the atrocities blame them on something else if not religion? I don't know. Would they have created them were it not for religion? I don't know.
What I do know is this. The atrocities they commit are not taught by the religion and are not condoned by the religion.
Regarding the old testament, yeah, there's a lot of stuff in there that I don't understand, and I don't know how it fits in the grand scheme.
But again, what I do know is this. The Bible as a whole, Old Testament and New Testament, teach a holistic philosophy. And when I read something that does not jibe with that holistic philosophy, I do not take it as being representative of what The Bible teaches. The holistic philosophy I refer to is to love God and to do His will through loving others and forgiving others. The battle you're referring to does not, within my current understanding, jibe with this philosophy. So I do not accept it as being representative of how God wants us to be and what He wants us to do.
Someone mentioned that if you have faith, you don't have to think. This is not true. With faith, one must have wisdom and discernment. And with wisdom and discernment, one must understand how some things fit and others do not.
People who have committed atrocities in the name of religion have done so through foolishness, ignorance, and evil, none of which are in harmony with God or with faith. |
