perhaps religion(s) are not to be blamed.
Some religions do advocate destroying their opponents though. I remember something where (was it Moses?) was raising his arms so that God will help him to defeat the enemy. God was helping with an atrocity. I'm going from memory, so don't know how accurate this is. But I'll move on for now.

Do you mean that some people choose to do atrocities in the name of religion ? That they use religion as an excuse for the atrocities ? And if religion is not available, they will blame their atrocities on something else ?

In this case, these people are doing atrocities for a reason they do not care to disclose, or want to hide the reason, or can't quite understand the real reason for them doing atrocities in the first place. Then you can say those people are to be blamed for this, and not the religion itself.

However:
suppose kids watch violence on TV/media throughout their childhood. They grow up to be cruel violent individuals, with disregard to other people's feelings, etc. Are these kids to be blamed for their behavior ? Or did violence "help" to make these kids violent ? I think that violence did "help" in this case. Is violence to be blamed though ? I don't know if you can blame violence, as it's not an entity. Maybe it's the parents to blame for letting kids watch violent media.
But still one can say that violence shares some of the blame, as it had a helping hand.

My view on religion is similar. Religion has a helping hand in causing trouble here and there, as there are many religions which do not exactly like each other. This dislike for another' people's religion creates static, and sometimes things go very wrong, like creating atrocities.

So, religion itself is not to blame, but it is a tool that sometimes can give people an excuse to cause trouble.
