until it's institutionalizied. Then the system takes over and it's mainly downhill from there. Consider:
Judaism: 10 commandments are great. Some centuries later they commit genocide against the Amalek people - "in the name of God"
Christianity: Jesus's message was "love". Centuries later there was the Spanish Queen Isabella who "depopulated the whole provinces... in the name of Christ and his holy mother", in her own words. Then crucades, holocost, you name it. OK, those were just Catholics, but it's no better with other branches (Northern Ireland?)
Islam (teaching or peace - isn't it the translation?). Centuries later: jihad (not in the original sense), intifada, 9/11, suicide bombings.
I'm less familiar with other religions, but I suspect that anyting institutionalized gets rigid and eventually cares only about its own dogmas, not the founders' overriding message. It's some kind of law. American Constitution is, sadly, no exception. I don't know if there are any.
