I've seen quite a regular bit of by hadji2005-01-16 20:15:27
  I think it's the Conversion Thing by Dazed2005-01-16 20:24:13
But there again, the doctrine of conversion by hadji2005-01-16 20:30:18
"should be" "supposed to be" - these are goals by Dazed 2005-01-16 21:09:06
however, they are not generally how conversion-related experiences are for many people or, more importantly, how conversion is seen.

There are many churches that would welcome new members but do not actively seek them. These are the people who do it the way you say they should (others disagree with you, hence I'm pointing out that you say it should be - I personally agree with you though).

The basis for the ridicule and negativity comes from experiences from the other group of Christians - the things you "know" about (even if what you "know" is not true or even based on your experiences).

Of course, everyone hears about the extremists in any group, and that forms their impression. That impression is convert them - save them - make them like us - sometimes at almost all cost. Those who are not like the "us" and do not want to be like the "us" take great offense. They are not wrong, they are interpreting what they experience and reacting to it.

As a further factor, since many of these extreme conversion churches are the loudest thing one hears about Christianity, it is the basis for many people's views - and it is a generally negative view - of Christianity as a whole.

OK, so that was all very poorly worded. I apologize, but I hope you also understood some of it so you can respond.
