Any concept can encourage zealotry. Irrational ones don't have a monopoly on that. Money is a rational concept. It exists. If you have it, you can get stuff with it. Look at all the atrocities that are done for money. Oil? WMDs? They're a rational concept. It was rational, in a way, to believe that Saddam may have had them. Why was it rational? Because we gave them to him. Anything can cause people to get fired up. Racism. Nationalism. Anything.
